Introduction to Computer Graphics and Fundamentals of Web Design

This course introduces the elements and principles of graphic design. It explores industry design software in the PC environment and how to use the computer as an artistic tool. Our graphic design career program will include the demonstrations of the tools, palette techniques and menus used in the following software programs: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. Students in our graphic design career program will learn how to lay out and design brochures, posters, identity systems (post cards, business cards, letterhead, envelopes), magazine pages, etc. Proper mounting techniques will be demonstrated and practiced and Design Elements and the Principles of Design Structure will be addressed and applied to each project and in-class assignment. Among the curriculum offered at our web design school in Brooklyn, students will learn that the Fundamentals of Web Design part of the course focuses on the overall production processes surrounding web site design with particular emphasis on design elements involving layout, navigation and interactivity. Digital Photography

This course introduces the basic principles of digital photography and explores them through problem-solving assignments. It emphasizes image manipulation and the use of digital photography in graphic design layouts. Topics include: The basics of traditional photography applied to the digital darkroom; Scanning and image transfer; Photo editing and restoration; System calibration; Photo manipulation: Special techniques in photography: black white images, toning, solarization, photo sandwich, mosaic, etc.; Using photography in design; Adobe Photoshop; Preparing images for the web


Illustration

This course focuses on the basic principles of illustration such as color, form, composition, as well as concept development and communication. It presents the history of illustration and its importance in graphic design. Assignments focus on the creation of original artwork through traditional and digital media, including scans, vector-based, and pixel-based software. Students will study the elements of illustration, the principles of character development and the history of illustration. Students will understand the connection illustration makes between graphic design and fine art. Modern day illustrators will be explored and integrated into the study of the masters. Adobe Illustrator will be the primary tool for most projects, however, students are allowed to integrate fine art sketches, drawings and paintings into their digital illustrations. Students will also prepare a written critique and analysis of an illustrator of their choice applying the elements and principles to the work as discussed in lecture.


Graphic Design

This course presents the basic principles of graphic design and explores them through problem-solving assignments. It gives an overview of the graphic design field and professional working methods. It emphasizes the development of strong conceptual content and solid craftsmanship in design execution. Course will include the demonstrations of the tools, palettes, techniques and menus used in the following software programs: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. The design process is introduced and practiced with each project preparing the student to tackled problems and find solutions for those problems in an efficient and creative way. Proper mounting techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Design Elements and the Principles of Design Structure will be addressed and applied to each project and in-class assignment. Students will begin to explore the various areas of expertise that a designer can specialize in. Graphic Design history is introduced and students are asked to look at other artwork and critically think about the design elements and principles involved. The art of the re-design is explored and implemented in numerous projects where the research step of the design process becomes an important element of the overall project's success.


Interactive Digital Media

This course introduces the development of menus for interactive DVD and Video-CD, production and editing techniques, design of content branching and production techniques. It explores and analyzes the use of these types of media, including education, industrial, entertainment and events production. Topics include: Background for Interactive Media Development; Interactive Television; The Internet; CD-ROM Technology

Interactive Design; Design Documents; Flowcharts and Site Maps; Human Interfacing; Prototyping; Structure and Design of Interactive Instruction; Test Construction and Evaluation; Structure of Interactive Entertainment Comics and Games on the Internet; Special Development Topics


Portfolio

This course has students develop a portfolio for professional practice as a graphic designer from new assignments and from the refinement of work completed in previous courses. It addresses career options, portfolio presentation, resume writing, and professional practices. Topics include: Planning your portfolio: The Cover Letter/Statement of Intent; Advertising Design; Corporate Design; Book, Music/CD Design; Informative Design: Interactivity Design; Editorial Design; Design Businesses; Design Education
