Choosing a Role Where There’s Room to Develop

Choosing a Role Where There’s Room to Develop

When you’re looking for a job, one of the main questions you might have is about long-term prospects. It’s natural to want to know about what the future might hold for you and whether you’ll be able to make something of yourself within a company. Here are some ways to help you choose a role with real progression opportunities.

Work in a company that’s growing. Whether it’s small or large is irrelevant, as long as it is expanding. Companies which are growing give you the opportunity to shine and show what you’re really able to do. A growing company has a growing workload, so show that you can handle the pressure.

Look for companies which have set levels and pay bands. This way, you’ll know that there are higher levels which you can move up to as you develop within your role.

If you’re just starting out, take on a role as an apprentice. There will often be a permanent job on offer at the end of the apprenticeship, though double check first as sometimes it will be purely for experience.

Ask about progression in your interview. Don’t focus on it too heavily or they might get the impression that you’d be more ambitious than loyal. However, it is perfectly reasonable to ask, and showing a degree of interest will demonstrate your passion for the role.
