How to Avoid Coming Across Negatively in an Interview

You’ve made it through to the internet process, and that is in itself an achievement. However, you’re still a long way from being able to seal the deal and walk away with the job you want. An interview is the most important part of the process and you should be careful about how you come across. Here are some tips about how to avoid creating a negative impression:

  • Don’t let your nerves get the better of you. If you seem a little bit quiet this could easily be misinterpreted as a bad attitude. The employer might think that you have something to hide.
  • Remember to interview for the job you’re applying for, not the job you want in five years’ time. Whilst it’s a good thing to seem ambitious, it’s not as positive to fixate on the future. Your interviewer might get the impression that their company is just a stepping stone for you.
  • If you want to ask about salary and benefits, be careful about how you phrase the question. Salary is a perfectly reasonable topic to address but don’t make it seem as though that’s your main focus.
  • Prepare thoroughly. If you don’t know anything about the company or the sector, it will look as though you don’t have a genuine interest.
  • Be smart. Dress for business and look as professional as you can. Even if the dress code is casual you will need to be well presented for the interview.
