Does Teaching Offer Natural Progression?

Teaching is a challenging yet highly rewarding career path to choose. There is a lot of room to move up the pay scale and to gain additional responsibilities as you become more experienced. However, does this progression happen naturally as it might in many other jobs?

It’s perhaps important to establish what you might class as progression in your job. Does it mean getting a pay rise? Does it mean moving into a more managerial position?

If to you progression means an increase in pay, then this will happen naturally as long as you are performing well in your role. You will usually be given an appraisal each year and if this goes well, you will be able to move up to the next stage of the pay scale.

If progression means taking on additional responsibilities, the opportunities may be easily available but you will normally still have to interview for the position. If positions come up in your current school, you will be able to apply internally.

Often progression into more managerial roles will require something to change – schools rarely grow in the same way as businesses might. This means you could be waiting a long time for someone to leave or to retire. In this instance, you may want to look for roles in different schools once you have experience.

If you want to move into management and dream of being a principal or vice principal, you may need additional qualifications and experience. However, you classroom experience will set you in good stead to begin working towards your goals.
